My experience visiting Osan Air Base

This past winter I decided to visit Korea to see some friends. While staying in Seoul, I decided to search for the nearest commissary to buy food and gifts. The Osan Air Base Commissary, an hour’s drive away, offers a large selection of products. To reach there a vehicle is essential for the trip. Reaching the base was a surreal experience because I have only been to foreign bases while still in the military so it was strange walking around as a civilian. The area also had a bunch of snow making the scenery very picturesque but also cold.

Why Visit Osan Air Base Commissary?

Affordable Prices: American brand products are significantly cheaper compared to off-base prices.

Wide Selection: The commissary stocks a variety of products found in U.S. commissaries, plus numerous Korean items.

Convenience: Access to familiar products can make your stay in Korea more comfortable.

The exchange store in Osan was also very nice. Inside there was a class six with a large selection of drinks like soju much cheaper than off base. They also had higher-end spirits that were not available in the common stores such as 711. For example, the Hwayo brand of soju I saw almost doubled the price off base, and this was a more premium version. I highly recommend buying some to bring back to friends or family so they can sample them.

Some Tips for Visiting Military Commissaries Abroad –

• Transportation: Ensure you have a reliable means of transport. I think it is easiest to have a car.
• Access: Verify access requirements for the base in advance. At the time of visiting, did not need any registration and entered with just my ID.
• Currency: Carry both local currency and U.S. dollars for convenience in case of emergencies.
• Timing: Visit during off-peak hours to avoid crowds and long lines. Entering around lunch break is usually a busy time.
